I am a Creative who owns an art gallery and workshop in Baltimore Maryland where I hold Sahwira Sisterhood Circles and share creative processes for healing, (re)connection to the Ancestors, spiritual clarity, connection with other sisters, and empowerment. I have been divinely called to this work.
As a Black woman who has 59 years of experience existing in a world that is unjust to people of color, I know firsthand the importance of the bonds of sisterhood with those who walk this same path. Founding the Sahwira Sisterhood is my response. It is time we removed the mask and begin existing as we are! No more mask wearing to make others comfortable in our presence. It is not our burden to make others comfortable because of our existence.

Reveal your story through words + textile imagery.
What are the significant artifacts of your lineage that you would like to pass down?
It does not matter if this isn't already a tradition in your family - be the leader to start it!
Most of us have heard at least a little something about the stories passed down through the ages by our Ancestors. Even if we haven't heard the stories - we've heard the stories about these oral traditions. They are an intricate part of our heritage!
For me personally, this tradition has not been carried forward in my lineage - at least not to my knowledge. But that means little...I will continue the story telling through the quilts I make for myself and my family. You can too! And I urge you to choose to continue this vital tradition and preserve our history.

We hold 2 monthly Sisterhood Circles, available for in-person or virtual attendance. This is time for gathering and sharing ourselves, our traditions, and our culture and heritage. These are sacred circles designed to uplift and empower.

Our annual Sahwira Sisters Retreat is time for us to gather in-person away from the hustle and bustle of life. This is time of Reclamation, Recharge, and Rest.

There are many diverse cultures who create quilts which tell a story, celebrate an event or milestone, and are symbolic to that peoples' journey in some way. I invite you to continue this time-honored tradition with me! No experience (or sewing machine) necessary.
